Abstract
A glass, glass-ceramic, or ceramic bead is described, with an internal porous scaffold microstructure that is surrounded by an amorphous shield. The shield serves to protect the internal porous microstructure of the shield while increasing the overall strength of the porous microstructure and improve the flowability of the beads either by themselves or in devices such as biologically degradable putty that would be used in bone or soft tissue augmentation or regeneration. The open porosity present inside the bead will allow for enhanced degradability in-vivo as compared to solid particles or spheres and also promote the growth of tissues including but not limited to all types of bone, soft tissue, blood vessels, and nerves.

A shielded glass scaffold comprising
- a mixture of bioactive glass fibers and bioactive glass beads, some of the fibers and beads fused to one another;
- said mixture being surrounded by a shield of fused glass, the shield having pores therein.
A method of preparing shielded glass scaffolds comprising the steps of:
- 1) mixing bioactive glass beads with bioactive glass fibers to form compressible agglomerates;
- 2) sintering the agglomerates
- 3) dropping the sintered agglomerates through a flame with a temperature of about 3600° F. to 5600° F. to form a glassy exterior;
- 4) cooling and collecting the resulting shielded glass scaffolds.
A method of preparing shielded glass scaffolds comprising the steps of:
- 1) forming bioactive glass agglomerates;
- 2) placing in a crucible and heating to about 900° F. to about 1100° F. for a period of about ten to about twenty minutes, and then cooling to form sintered agglomerates,
- 3) dropping the sintered agglomerates through a flame and
- 4) cooling to form shielded glass scaffolds
A method of preparing shielded glass scaffolds comprising the steps of:
- 1) forming bioactive glass fiber and particles agglomerates;
- 2) placing in a crucible and heating to above the glass transition temperature and below the glass melt temperature, and then cooling to form sintered agglomerates;
- 3) dropping the sintered agglomerates through a flame with a temperature of about 3600° F. to 5600° F.;
- 4) cooling and collecting the resulting shielded glass scaffolds.
A shielded glass scaffold comprising bioactive glass beads surrounded by a shield of porous fused glass.
A shielded scaffold comprising two or more different glass compositions formed by mixing glass compositions selected from the group consisting of at least two glass fiber compositions and at least two glass bead compositions prior to thermal treatment.
A method of preparing glass scaffolds comprising the steps of:
- 1) forming bioactive glass agglomerates from two or more different glass compositions;
- 2) placing in a crucible and heating to above the glass transition temperature and below the glass melt temperature, and then cooling to form sintered agglomerates;
