A polybenzodifuran ladder polymer is disclosed.

A process comprising:
- polymerizing a bisalkynyl-tetraoxybenzene (BATB) molecule to form a first polymeric material;
- and
- subjecting the first polymeric material to iodine-promoted cyclization conditions to form a polybenzodifuran material having two aryl-iodide functional handles per repeat unit, the polybenzodifuran material having the following chemical structure:
- wherein R represents an alkyl group.
