Abstract
Disclosed herein is a method of manufacturing a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) including directly depositing a liquid suspension containing a platinum precursor onto an ionically conductive membrane (e.g., proton-exchange membrane) that, when the platinum precursor deposit layer is reduced, provides a layer that will scavenge hydrogen that has diffused back through the membrane due to cell stack pressure differential.
Claims18
A membrane electrode assembly comprising:
- an ionically conductive membrane positioned between a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein the ionically conductive membrane is in direct contact with the second electrode;
- a cured recombination layer deposited on a surface of the ionically conductive membrane, wherein the ionically conductive membrane is positioned between the second electrode and the recombination layer;
- and
- an ionomer layer deposited on a surface of the cured recombination layer, wherein the ionomer layer is positioned between the cured recombination layer and the first electrode.

A method for manufacturing a membrane electrode assembly, the method comprising:
- depositing a recombination suspension directly onto a surface of an ionically conductive membrane forming a recombination layer, wherein the recombination suspension includes a solvent and metal oxide;
- reducing the recombination layer to provide a cured recombination layer;
- and
- depositing an ionomer layer on a surface of the cured recombination layer.
