## Abstract

An article may include a carcass or jacket, and at least one composite member arranged within the carcass or jacket for inhibiting longitudinal stretch of the article. The composite member may include a plurality of fibers arranged in a polymeric binder, the polymeric binder bonding the composite member to the carcass or jacket. The carcass or jacket may be formed substantially of rubber or thermoplastic elastomer. The plurality of fibers may include fibers formed substantially from at least one of S-glass, aramid and carbon fiber. The polymer binder may be formed substantially of a thermoplastic material or of a thermoset material. In manufacturing of the article, the carcass or jacket may be extruded to surround the composite member. The article may be a handrail or an elevator belt.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An article, comprising:
a carcass; and
at least one composite member arranged within the carcass for inhibiting longitudinal stretch of the article, the composite member comprising a plurality of fibers arranged in a polymeric binder, the polymeric binder bonding the composite member to the carcass.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1, wherein the carcass is formed substantially of thermoplastic polyurethane.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The article of claim 2, wherein the plurality of fibers comprises fibers formed substantially from at least one of S-glass, aramid and carbon fiber.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The article of claim 3, wherein the polymeric binder is formed substantially of a thermoplastic material selected from a group consisting of thermoplastic polyester, polybutylene terephthalate, polyethylene terephthalate, Isoplast® and nylon.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

The article of claim 3, wherein the polymeric binder is formed substantially of a thermoset material selected from a group consisting of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) cured urethane, methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) cured urethane, reactive polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy, acrylic resin and modified acrylic resin.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1, comprising a splice joint between two adjoining ends of the article, the splice joint comprising overlapping portions of the composite member and an adhesive therebetween.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The article of claim 6, wherein the overlapping portions comprise matching positive and negative tapered sections, and a ratio of a length of the tapered section and a thickness of the composite member is at least 100:1.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The article of claim 1, comprising a cover at least partially surrounding and bonded to the carcass, the carcass is formed of a first thermoplastic material, the cover is formed of a second thermoplastic material, and the first thermoplastic material is harder than the second thermoplastic material.

### Claim 9

A method of manufacturing an article, comprising:
providing at least one composite member comprising a plurality of fibers arranged in a polymeric binder; and
arranging the composite member within a carcass,
wherein the polymeric binder bonds the composite member to the carcass, and
wherein the composite member inhibits longitudinal stretch of the article.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, comprising extruding the carcass to surround the composite member, and forming the carcass substantially of a thermoplastic elastomer.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, comprising preheating the composite member prior to the step of extruding.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, comprising applying at least one of corona discharge, plasma treatment, cleaning and surface activation to the composite member to improve adhesion with the carcass.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10, comprising:
passing the composite member through an extrusion die;
supplying the molten polymer through flow channels of the extrusion die; and
embedding the composite member in the molten polymer in a combining zone of the extrusion die.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, comprising heating at least one of the composite member and the molten polymer upstream of the combining zone.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the step of heating comprises passing the molten polymer through passages of the extrusion die adjacent to at least one heating element so as to increase the temperature of the molten polymer.

### Claim 16 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, comprising forming a splice joint between two adjoining ends of the article by overlapping portions of the composite member and applying an adhesive therebetween.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The method of claim 16, comprising machining matching positive and negative tapered sections in the adjoining ends, and machining the tapered sections so that a ratio of a length of the tapered section and a thickness of the composite member is at least 100:1.
