## Abstract

A seal arrangement for joining a first component to a second component is disclosed. The seal arrangement may have a first sealing surface formed as an integral portion of the first component, and a second sealing surface formed as an integral portion of the second component and configured to directly engage the first sealing surface. The seal arrangement may also have an energizer engaged with the first sealing surface and configured to inhibit movement of the first sealing surface away from the second sealing surface during a temperature drop.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A seal arrangement for joining a first component to a second component, the seal arrangement comprising:
a first sealing surface formed as a stationary and integral portion of the first component;
a second sealing surface formed as a stationary and integral portion of the second component and configured to directly engage the first sealing surface; and
an energizer engaged with the first sealing surface and configured to inhibit movement of the first sealing surface away from the second sealing surface during a temperature drop.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein the energizer is further configured to push the first sealing surface toward the second sealing surface during the temperature drop.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein the energizer has a coefficient of thermal expansion higher than a coefficient of thermal expansion of the first sealing surface.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The seal arrangement of claim 3, wherein the coefficient of thermal expansion of the energizer is about 1.1 to about 2.25 times higher than the coefficient of thermal expansion of the first sealing surface.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein the energizer is ring-shaped and configured to surround both of the first and second sealing surfaces.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein the energizer is ring-shaped and located radially inward of both of the first and second sealing surfaces.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein the energizer is made from a material different from materials of the first and second sealing surfaces.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The seal arrangement of claim 7, wherein:
the energizer is made from zinc or aluminum; and
the first and second sealing surfaces are made from stainless steel.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The seal arrangement of claim 7, wherein:
the energizer is made from iron, nickel, titanium, or copper; and
the first and second sealing surfaces are made from stainless steel.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein both of the first and second sealing surfaces are oriented at an oblique angle relative to a flow of fluid through the first and second components.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein both of the first and second sealing surfaces are parallel with a flow of fluid through the first and second components.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein:
the first component is a filter cartridge protrusion;
the second component is a housing protrusion received inside the filter cartridge protrusion; and
the energizer is ring-shaped and connected to an outer annular surface of the filter cartridge protrusion.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein:
the first sealing component is a filter cartridge protrusion;
the second sealing component is a housing protrusion that receives the filter cartridge protrusion; and
the energizer is ring-shaped and connected to an outer annular surface of the housing protrusion.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, wherein:
the first sealing component is a filter cartridge protrusion;
the second sealing component is a housing recess that receives the filter cartridge protrusion; and
the energizer is ring-shaped and connected to an inner annular surface of the filter cartridge protrusion.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The seal arrangement of claim 1, further including a compression seal disposed between the first and second components at a location radially outward of the energizer.

### Claim 16

A filter cartridge, comprising:
a canister;
a filtration medium disposed inside the canister;
a protrusion extending axially from an end of at least one of the canister or the filtration medium and having a sealing surface formed thereon; and
an energizer ring connected to the protrusion at a radial side opposite the sealing surface, the energizer ring having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than the protrusion.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The filter cartridge of claim 16, further including:
threads formed within an outer annular surface of the protrusion;
a compression seal engaged with a shoulder of the canister;
an inlet formed radially inward of the compression seal; and
an outlet formed within an end face of the protrusion.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The filter cartridge of claim 16, wherein:
the sealing surface is an inner annular surface and oriented at an oblique angle relative to a flow of fluid through the filter cartridge; and
the energizer ring is disposed around an outer annular surface of the protrusion.

### Claim 19 (depends on 16)

The filter cartridge of claim 16, wherein:
the protrusion is made from stainless steel; and
the energizer ring is made from aluminum or zinc.

### Claim 20

A filter assembly, comprising:
