A data centre (100) includes at least one rack room (in for example module 140) having a floor and a plurality of rack storage areas on the floor, each rack storage area being arranged to accommodate a plurality of racks (143) in which a plurality of rack-mountable electronic components may be housed, one or more controllable air circulation systems (in for example module 122), one or more cold aisles (144) in the rack room, each cold aisle being adjacent to a rack storage area, and one or more hot aisles (145) in the rack room, each hot aisle being adjacent to a rack storage area. There may be a large air duct, in the form of a personnel corridor (123), for transporting, under the control of the one or more air circulation systems, cooling air, above the floor, to the one or more cold aisles. The air supply corridor/duct (123) may have a height greater than 1.5 m above the floor and a cross-sectional area of at least 2 m2 and a maximum dimension in the plane of the cross-section of less than 3 m.
1-21. (canceled)
22) A data centre building including
23) A data centre building according to claim 1, wherein at least part of the air supply duct is defined by means of a personnel corridor.
24) A data centre according to claim 2, wherein the personnel corridor is an access corridor providing access to at least one of the plurality of rows of racks.
25) A data centre according to claim 3, wherein the access corridor and at least one of
26) A data centre according to claim 4, wherein each cold aisle is separated from the access corridor by means of an access door arrangement comprising a door movable from a closed position, closing the doorway, and an open position, allowing personnel access to the aisle.
27) A data centre according to claim 5, wherein the access door arrangement comprises a vent controllable to vary air flow from the access corridor into the cold aisle.
28) A data centre according to claim 1, wherein the air supply duct extends in a horizontal direction for at least 90% of its length.
29) A data centre according to claim 1, wherein the air supply duct has a maximum dimension within a plane of the cross-section of the duct of less than 4 m.
30) A data centre according to claim 1, wherein the air supply duct comprises a vent controllable to vary air flow along the duct.
31) A data centre according to claim 1, wherein the air supply duct comprises a plurality of vents, and wherein the air supply corridor comprises a vent associated with each cold aisle of the plurality of cold aisles.
32) A data centre according to claim 10, wherein each vent is a controllable vent.
33) A data centre according to claim 1, wherein the air cooling system comprises at least one of:
34) A data centre according to claim 1, wherein the air cooling system comprises a controllable air circulation system arranged to circulate the cooling air to the plurality of racks under a controlled pressure regime.
35) A data centre according to claim 1, wherein the air cooling system comprises an evaporative cooling unit configured to treat ambient air from outside the data centre building.
36) A method of cooling items of electronic equipment in a data centre, wherein the data centre includes a plurality of racks arranged in a plurality of rows on a floor, the racks accommodating a multiplicity of, and each containing a plurality of, rack-mountable items of electronic equipment, the plurality of rows defining therebetween a plurality of interleaved hot aisles and cold aisles,
37) A method according to claim 15, comprising using ambient air from outside the data centre to cool the items of electronic equipment accommodated in the racks.
38) A method according to claim 15, wherein the air cooling system comprises an evaporative cooling unit, and wherein the method comprises operating the evaporative cooling unit to treat ambient air from outside the data centre.
39) A method according to claim 17, wherein the air transported along the air supply duct comprises ambient air treated by operation of the evaporative cooling unit.
40) A method according to claim 15, wherein the air cooling system comprises a controllable air circulation system for controlling the transport of cooling air from the air cooling system to the items of electronic equipment along the air supply duct.
41) A method according to claim 15, wherein the cooling air transported along the air supply duct is selected from one or more member of the group consisting of (i) ambient air from outside the data centre, (ii) ambient air from outside the data centre and recirculated air, and (iii) recirculated air.
