Abstract
A standby power controller having data communication capability. The standby power controller includes a data communication means adapted to communicate with a processing and display device. The processing and display device includes a processor and a display which are adapted to provide a user interface for the standby power controller.

A standby power controller including:
- a. a monitored and controlled outlet, wherein power supply through the monitored and controlled outlet is interrupted if an appliance powered therefrom is detected to be in a standby state;
- b. a data communication means configured to establish a data communications link with a processing and display unit, wherein:
- (1) the data communications link communicates usage data characterizing the functioning of the standby power controller, and
- (2) the processing and display unit provides a user interface for the standby power controller, the user interface displaying information concerning the functioning of the standby power controller.
A method for operating a standby power controller, the standby power controller having a monitored and controlled outlet wherein power supply through the monitored and controlled outlet is interrupted if a device powered therefrom is detected to be in a standby state, the method including the steps of:
- a. establishing a data communications link between the standby power controller and a processing and display unit;
- b. the processing and display unit receiving usage data from the standby power controller via the data communications link, the usage data characterizing the functioning of the standby power controller;
- c. providing a user interface on the processing and display unit, the user interface displaying information concerning the functioning of the standby power controller.
A mobile computing device:
- a. including a user interface for a standby power controller having a monitored and controlled outlet, wherein power supply through the monitored and controlled outlet is interrupted if an appliance powered therefrom is detected to be in a standby state, with the user interface displaying information concerning the functioning of the standby power controller,
- b. configured to establish a data communications link with the standby power controller, the data communications link communicating usage data characterizing the functioning of the standby power controller.
