Abstract
Measures for routing data packets in a data center network are provided. A packet forwarding function in a server in a data center network is configured to forward data packets to/from virtual systems hosted on that server. The packet forwarding function is configured to make forwarding decisions for received data packets based on the destination internet protocol (IP) address of the received data packet, and forward the data packet at least on the basis of the forwarding decision.
Claims20
A method, comprising:
- advertising an external IP address of a packet forwarding function as a next hop IP address for one or more servers external to a data center network to reach a first virtual system, wherein the packet forwarding function includes an internal IP address that is different than the external IP address;
- receiving, at the packet forwarding function comprised within a server in the data center network, a data packet being routed to or from the first virtual system having a first IP address and hosted on the server;
- determining, by the packet forwarding function, a destination of the received data packet by querying a packet forwarding data store to determine a next hop IP address associated with a destination IP address of the received data packet;
- and
- forwarding, by the packet forwarding function, the data packet based at least in part on the next hop IP address associated with the destination IP address of the received data packet, wherein the next hop IP address includes at least one of the internal IP address, the external IP address, an IP address associated with a border gateway, or an IP address associated with a device within the data center network.
A system, comprising:
- a memory coupled to at least one processor and configured to provide the at least processor with instructions;
- and
- the at least one processor configured to:
- advertise an external IP address of a packet forwarding function as a next hop IP address for one or more servers external to a data center network to reach a first virtual system, wherein the packet forwarding function includes an internal IP address that is different than the external IP address;
- receive, at the packet forwarding function comprised within the server in the data center network, a data packet being routed to or from the first virtual system having a first IP address and hosted on the server;
- determine, by the packet forwarding function, a destination of the received data packet by querying a packet forwarding data store to determine a next hop IP address associated with a destination IP address of the received data packet;
- and
- forward, by the packet forwarding function, the data packet based at least in part on the next hop IP address associated with the destination IP address, wherein the next hop IP address includes at least one of the internal IP address, the external IP address, an IP address associated with a border gateway, or an IP address associated with a device within the data center network.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer executable instructions stored thereon, which, when executed by a processor cause a computing device to perform a method comprising:
- advertising an external IP address of a packet forwarding function as a next hop IP address for one or more servers external to the data center network to reach a first virtual system, wherein the packet forwarding function includes an internal IP address that is different than the external IP address;
- receiving, at the packet forwarding function comprised within a server in the data center network, a data packet being routed to or from the first virtual system having a first IP address and hosted on the server;
- determining, by the packet forwarding function, a destination of the received data packet by querying a packet forwarding data store to determine a next hop IP address associated with a destination IP address of the received data packet;
- and
- forwarding, by the packet forwarding function, the data packet based at least in part on the next hop IP address associated with the destination IP address, wherein the next hop IP address includes at least one of the internal IP address, the external IP address, an IP address associated with a border gateway, or an IP address associated with a device within the data center network.
