A method to authenticate, value documents or items having:

• a conveyor to move value document or items to an examining position;
• a device to read a zone containing a QR code, on the front surface of the value document or item;
• a spectrofluorometer to read a taggant bearing zone, label containing an array of LEDs covering wavelengths from about 1200 nanometers down to about 230 nanometers. The entire array of LEDs are energized and active when the machine is examining value documents or items, so the taggants are excited by a range of photons with wavelengths from long infra-red to short ultra-violet;
• at least one transducer;
• an optical digital spectrum analyzer;
• at least one programmable application specific integrated circuit chip;
• at least one programmable digital signal processing algorithm programmed with a master fast fourier transform algorithm containing variables that can be changed.
• a database that includes ideal spectral signatures by file numbers;
• at least one computer;
• at least one microcontroller;
• A library of combinations of variables that can be substituted into the master Fast Fourier Transform algorithm to create a multitude of Fast Fourier Transform algorithms, determined by the individual file number specified on the QR zone.
• These Fast Fourier transform algorithms include finite impulse response “brick wall” filters which edit full wide received spectral peaks signature by removing most of it leaving only select segments, hereafter referred to as “snippets”.
• The number of snippets, their individual widths, and their position on the full wide spectrum of received peaks signature, are three variables, which can be altered in various ways to create a very extensive range of possibilities. The entire received signal is cut down to a set of snippets, by finite impulse response transform “brick wall” filters, defined by variables, substituted into it by the programmable master Fast Fourier Transform algorithm, so that, for each individual item number, only a small part of the entire received signal is used as the authentication key. Every item has its own key, that fits an ideal profile, stored in the database and which was made using the same snippets “brick wall” filters as are used in the authentication machine when it is examining value documents or items in real time. The key matches the ideal in the database, both made the same way, from the same full wide signal, edited down into snippets.
