• a control unit configured to assign a pushbutton unit to an appliance component based on the assignment information.

A method for controlling an appliance having a plurality of appliance components, comprising:

• assigning control of a first appliance component to a first pushbutton unit on a remote-control device and control of a second appliance component to a second pushbutton unit on the remote-control device, wherein each of the first and second pushbutton units has a unique, visually detectable distinguishing feature;
• and
• displaying, on a display unit of the remote-control device, a representation of the first and second appliance components, wherein each representation has the same unique, visually detectable distinguishing feature as the corresponding pushbutton unit to which the corresponding appliance component is assigned.
