Abstract
Novel lettuce, such as lettuce designated VAQUERO is disclosed. In some embodiments, the invention relates to the seeds of lettuce VAQUERO, to the plants and plant parts of lettuce VAQUERO, and to methods for producing a lettuce plant by crossing the lettuce VAQUERO with itself or another lettuce plant. The invention further relates to methods for producing a lettuce plant containing in its genetic material one or more transgenes and to the transgenic plants produced by that method and to methods for producing other lettuce plants derived from the lettuce VAQUERO.
Claims20
A seed of lettuce designated VAQUERO, wherein a representative sample of seed of said lettuce having been deposited under NCIMB No 42606.
A lettuce plant having all of the characteristics of lettuce VAQUERO listed in Table 1 when grown in the same environmental condition, or a part or a plant cell thereof.
A lettuce plant, or a part thereof, having all of the physiological and morphological characteristics of lettuce VAQUERO, wherein a representative sample of seed of said lettuce having been deposited under NCIMB No 42606.
A method of introducing a desired trait into lettuce VAQUERO comprising:
- (a) crossing a lettuce VAQUERO plant grown from lettuce VAQUERO seed, wherein a representative sample of seed has been deposited under NCIMB No. 42606, with another lettuce plant that comprises a desired trait to produce F1 progeny plants, wherein the desired trait is selected from the group consisting of insect resistance, herbicide resistance, disease resistance, water stress tolerance, heat tolerance, improved shelf life, delayed shelf life, and improved nutritional quality;
- (b) selecting one or more progeny plants that have the desired trait to produce selected progeny plants;
- (c) crossing the selected progeny plants with the lettuce VAQUERO plants to produce backcross progeny plants;
- (d) selecting for backcross progeny plants that have the desired trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of lettuce VAQUERO listed in Table 1 when grown in the same environmental condition to produce selected backcross progeny plants;
- and
- (e) repeating steps (c) and (d) three or more times in succession to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise the desired trait and the physiological and morphological characteristics of lettuce VAQUERO listed in Table 1 when grown in the same environmental condition.
