Abstract
Disclosed herein are various embodiments designed to implement a handover operation of a user entity (UE) from a source base station to a target base station using a predictive routing feature in LISP or other ID protocols for packet replication to reduce latency in packet delivery to the user entity.

A network device, comprising:
- a transceiver;
- a non-transitory memory storing executable instructions;
- and
- one or more processors in communication with the non-transitory memory and the transceiver, wherein the one or more processors execute the executable instructions to:
- transmit packets to a mobile device via a source base station currently in communication with to the mobile device;
- receive a target base station identifier that identifies a target base station predicted to be a next base station to be in communication with to the mobile device via a handover operation;
- establish communication between the SGW and the target base station in response to receiving the target base station identifier;
- initiate replication of the packets currently being transmitted to the source base station to generate replicate packets;
- transmit the replicate packets to the target base station while also continuing to transmit the packets to the source base station;
- modify transmission of the packets to the mobile device from the source base station to the target base station;
- and
- terminate the replication of the packets.
A method of performing a handover operation, comprising:
- transmitting packets to a mobile device via a source base station currently in communication with to the mobile device;
- receiving a target base station identifier that identifies a target base station predicted to be a next base station to be in communication with to the mobile device via a handover operation;
- establishing communication with the target base station in response to receiving the target base station identifier;
- initiating replication of the packets currently being transmitted to the source base station to generate replicate packets;
- transmitting the replicate packets to the target base station while also continuing to transmit the packets to the source base station;
- modifying transmission of the packets to the mobile device from the source base station to the target base station;
- and
- terminating the replication of the packets.
A computer program product embodied in a non-transitory computer readable medium having computer executable program code embodied thereon, said computer executable program code when executed by a process performs a handover operation computer program product comprising:
- transmitting packets to a mobile device via a source base station currently in communication with to the mobile device;
- receiving a target base station identifier that identifies a target base station predicted to be a next base station to be in communication with to the mobile device via a handover operation;
- establishing communication with the target base station in response to receiving the target base station identifier;
- initiating replication of the packets currently being transmitted to the source base station to generate replicate packets;
- transmitting the replicate packets to the target base station while also continuing to transmit the packets to the source base station;
- receiving notification of the mobile device completing the handover operation to the target base station;
- modifying transmission of the packets to the mobile device from the source base station to the target base station;
- and
- terminating the replication of the packets.
