Abstract

A communication system and method includes a receiver for receiving a communication signal coupled through a physical medium in accordance with a protocol. An interface formed in a single substrate receives from the receiver an indication of the signal strength of the received communication signal. The interface also decodes the information contained in the received communication signal. For example, the interface sends the information decoded from the received communication signal to a first application for consuming the decoded information. The interface also sends the indication of the signal strength of the received communication signal to a second application for generating a quality determination of the physical medium in response to the indication of the signal strength of the received communication signal.

Dependent claims

A circuit, comprising:

a receiver operable to receive a first communication signal coupled through a physical medium in accordance with a protocol;
an interface formed in a single substrate, wherein the interface is operable to receive from the receiver an indication of the signal strength of the received first communication signal and to generate decoded information from information encoded in the received first communication signal;
and
at least one processor operable to execute instructions for receiving the decoded information decoded from the received first communication signal and to execute instructions for generating a quality determination of the physical medium in response to the indication of the signal strength of the received first received communication signal.

A method, comprising:

receiving at a first node a communication signal from a second node coupled through a portion of a physical medium in accordance with a protocol;
receiving at an interface formed in a single substrate of the first node an indication of the signal strength of the communication signal received by the first node wherein the interface is operable to decode information contained in the communication signal received by the first node;
storing the information decoded from the communication signal received by the first node;
and
generating a quality determination of the physical medium in response to the indication of the signal strength of the communication signal received by the first node.
