Abstract
An apparatus and method for frame buffer compression. For example, one embodiment of a method comprises: identifying a wavelet function to compress an original frame buffer image; performing a wavelet transform on the original frame buffer image using the wavelet function; using a specified subset of wavelet coefficients of the wavelet function to construct an approximated image function; determining residuals comprising differences between the original frame buffer image and the approximated image function; and storing the residuals for subsequent use in recreating the original frame buffer image from the approximated image function.
Claims28
A method comprising:
- identifying a wavelet function to compress a tile of an original image;
- performing a wavelet transform on pixels in the tile using the wavelet function;
- using a specified subset of wavelet coefficients of the wavelet function to construct an approximated image function;
- determining residuals comprising differences between the original image and the approximated image function;
- and
- storing the residuals for subsequent use in recreating the original image from the approximated image function.
An apparatus comprising:
- a buffer to store an original image;
- a graphics processing unit (GPU) comprising compression/decompression circuit to perform the operations of:
- performing a wavelet transform on the original image using the wavelet function;
- using a specified subset of wavelet coefficients of the wavelet function to construct an approximated image function;
- determining residuals comprising differences between the original image and the approximated image function;
- and
- storing the residuals for subsequent use in recreating the original image from the approximated image function.
An apparatus comprising:
- means for performing a wavelet transform on the original image using a wavelet function;
- means for using a specified subset of wavelet coefficients of the wavelet function to construct an approximated image function;
- means for determining residuals comprising differences between the original image and the approximated image function;
- and
- means for storing the residuals for subsequent use in recreating the original image from the approximated image function.
