Hardware and token based user authentication

A non-transitory machine-readable medium having stored thereon machine-readable instructions executable to cause a machine to perform operations comprising:

• obtaining, via a user device, first user biometric data from a user;
• accessing first stored user biometric data from a hardware secure element of a user device;
• comparing the first user biometric data with the first stored user biometric data;
• determining that the first user biometric data matches the first stored user biometric data;
• and
• in response to the determining, enabling use of a payment token for a payment to be made from a payment account associated with the user to a merchant associated with a merchant device.

A method, comprising:

• obtaining, via a user device, first user biometric data from a user;
• comparing the first user biometric data with first stored user biometric data, wherein the first stored user biometric data is stored in a hardware secure element of the user device;
• determining that the first user biometric data matches the first stored user biometric data;
• and
• in response to the determining, transmitting a user identity token to a second device, wherein the user identity token is configured to enable the second device to verify an identity of the user.
