Distributed storage of metadata for large binary data

A method comprising:

• receiving a request for a logical object comprising binary data and metadata describing the binary data, the metadata describing the binary data being stored in one or more of a plurality of storage nodes;
• receiving mapping information identifying the one or more of the plurality of storage nodes storing the metadata;
• accessing, by at least one hardware processor of a machine, the metadata describing the binary data from one of the one or more of the plurality of storage nodes based on the mapping information;
• and
• returning the metadata describing the binary data in a response to the request.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more hardware processors of a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:

• receiving a request for a logical object comprising binary data and metadata describing the binary data, the metadata describing the binary data being stored in one or more of a plurality of storage nodes;
• receiving mapping information identifying the one or more of the plurality of storage nodes storing the metadata;
• accessing the metadata describing the binary data from one of the one or more of the plurality of storage nodes based on the mapping information;
• and
• returning the metadata describing the binary data in a response to the request.
