Abstract

A downhole measurement system includes a data logger. The data logger includes a containment vessel containing a processor, an accelerometer, and memory. The containment vessel is characterized by a radial dimension less the diameter of a hole to be measured. The processor is operative to execute processor-readable instructions. The accelerometer is in data communication with the processor, and is operative to measure acceleration along three mutually orthogonal axes. The accelerometer is operative to output, to the processor, data characterizing the measured acceleration. The memory, in data communication with the processor, is operative to store processor-readable instructions. The stored instructions include processor-readable instructions, that when executed by the processor, cause the processor to receive the outputted acceleration data and write the received acceleration data to the memory.

Dependent claims

A downhole measurement system, comprising:

a data logger, comprising:
a containment vessel characterized by a radial dimension less the diameter of a hole to be measured;
a processor, housed in the containment vessel and operative to execute processor-readable instructions;
an accelerometer housed in the containment vessel, in data communication with the processor, and operative to measure acceleration along three mutually orthogonal axes and output, to the processor, data characterizing the measured acceleration;
and
memory housed in the containment vessel, in data communication with the processor, and storing processor-readable instructions;
wherein the stored instructions comprise processor-readable instructions, that when executed by the processor, cause the processor to receive the outputted acceleration data and write the received acceleration data to the memory.

A method to measure characteristics of a well lateral, the method comprising:

deploying a data logger into a well lateral, the data logger comprising:
a containment vessel characterized by a radial dimension less the diameter of a hole to be measured;
a processor, housed in the containment vessel and operative to execute processor-readable instructions;
an accelerometer housed in the containment vessel, in data communication with the processor, and operative to measure acceleration along three mutually orthogonal axes and output, to the processor, data characterizing the measured acceleration;
and
a memory housed in the containment vessel, in data communication with the processor, and storing processor-executable instructions;
and
wherein the stored instructions comprise processor executable instructions causing the processor to receive the outputted acceleration data and write the received acceleration data to the memory;
withdrawing the data logger while measuring, via the accelerometer, acceleration along three mutually orthogonal axes and output;
outputting, from the accelerometer to the processor, data characterizing the measured acceleration;
receiving, by the processor from the accelerometer, the data characterizing the measured acceleration;
and
writing, by the processor, the received acceleration data to the memory.
