Abstract
The lack of clear predictors of prostate cancer progression leads to subjective decision-making regarding courses of treatment. The identification of new biomarkers that are predictive of recurrence after radical prostatectomy would advance the field of prostate cancer treatment. Disclosed are miRNAs that can be used as molecular biomarkers to detect or predict the progression of prostate cancer and to adjust a treatment plan accordingly. Furthermore, kits are included for the detection of these miRNAs.
Claims20
A method for predicting biochemical recurrence in a subject following radical prostatectomy, comprising
- a) determining a miRNA expression profile from a sample from the subject of at least 1 miRNA listed in Table 2;
- and
- b) calculating a recurrence risk score from the miRNA expression profile;
- wherein a high recurrence risk score is an indication of biochemical recurrence within 1 to 5 years.
A method for predicting biochemical recurrence in a subject following post-prostatectomy salvage radiation therapy, comprising
- a) determining a miRNA expression profile from a sample from the subject of at least 1 miRNA listed in Table 3;
- and
- b) calculating a recurrence risk score from the miRNA expression profile;
- wherein a high recurrence risk score is an indication of biochemical recurrence within 1 to 5 years.
A method of screening for prostate cancer in a subject, comprising assaying a sample from the subject for levels of miRNA-1283, miRNA-137, or a combination thereof, and comparing the levels to control values, wherein a decrease in miRNA-1283 levels, miRNA-137 levels, or a combination thereof, is an indication that the subject has a prostate cancer.
