Abstract
Copolymers and latex paint compositions using such copolymers that are heat-age stable and provide good adhesion, block resistance, and hiding all while using lower amounts of pigment are described herein. In one aspect, the heat-age stable compositions include an acrylic, styrene acrylic, vinyl acrylic copolymer or blends thereof including, as additional polymerizable units, at least one polymerizable phosphate surfactant and at least one linear or branched hydrophobic monomer that are both polymerized into the acrylic, styrene acrylic, vinyl acrylic copolymer backbone.
Claims21
A heat-age stable latex paint composition comprising:
- a polymer including as polymerized units vinyl acetate;
- a phosphate surfactant selected from a propoxylated or ethoxylated phosphate acrylate surfactant, a propoxylated or ethoxylated phosphate methacrylate surfactant, or mixtures thereof;
- and at least one vinyl ester with a C4 to C30 linear or branched carbon chain;
- titanium dioxide;
- water;
- and
- wherein the heat-age stable latex paint composition has a KU viscosity increase as measured by ASTM D562 of no more than about 10 units after 4 weeks of aging at about 140° F.
A heat-age stable latex paint composition comprising
- a polymer including as polymerizable units vinyl acetate;
- a phosphate surfactant having a weight average molecular weight of about 300 to about 1500 and selected from a propoxylated or ethoxylated phosphate acrylate surfactant, a propoxylated or ethoxylated phosphate methacrylate surfactant, or mixtures thereof;
- and at least one vinyl ester with a C4 to C30 linear or branched carbon chain;
- titanium dioxide;
- water;
- and
- wherein the heat-age stable latex paint composition exhibits a KU viscosity increase as measured by ASTM D562 of no more than about 10 units after 4 weeks of aging at about 140° F. and wherein the heat-age stable latex paint composition, when dried as a film, exhibits a contrast ratio as tested by ASTM D2805-11 of about 0.9 to about 0.99 when the heat-age stable latex paint composition has a particle loading factor based on a weight ratio of the titanium dioxide to the polymer of greater than 1:2.
