Abstract
The present invention relates to processes for making compatibilized high aspect ratio barrier additives and polymer compositions that comprise compatibilized high aspect ratio barrier additives. The invention also relates to compositions produced by these processes, and articles formed from polymer compositions of this invention. The barrier additives provide passive barriers to gas molecules such as oxygen and carbon dioxide minimizing transit of such molecules through sidewalls of polymer articles containing the barrier additives.

A method to prepare barrier additives for a preselected polymer composition, comprising:
- (a) selecting at least one layered inorganic barrier additive precursor which is capable of intercalating small molecules;
- (b) selecting at least one organic compatibilization agent capable of intercalating into and bonding either ionically or covalently with the selected inorganic barrier additive precursor, wherein the at least one compatibilization agent has solubility parameters within about 8 MPa1/2 of the preselected polymer composition, has a chain length greater than about 20 atoms, comprises at least one functional group that can exothermically interact with the preselected polymer through dipole-dipole, acid-base, or hydrogen bonding interactions, and is thermally stable under the melt processing conditions employed for processing the preselected polymer composition;
- (c) selecting at least one vehicle, wherein the at least one vehicle has solubility parameters within about 8 MPa1/2 of both the preselected polymer composition and the compatibilization agent, and is thermally stable under the melt processing conditions employed for processing the preselected polymer composition;
- and
- (d) reacting the selected compatibilization agent with the selected inorganic barrier additive precursor and incorporating an effective amount of vehicle to prepare a compatibilized barrier additive composition.
A composition to add passive barrier properties to a preselected polymer composition, comprising:

- and
- (b) at least one vehicle in which the reaction product is dispersed in an effective amount, wherein the at least one vehicle has solubility parameters within about 8 MPa1/2 of both the preselected polymer composition and the compatibilization agent, and is thermally stable under the melt processing conditions employed for processing the preselected polymer composition.
