Abstract
Methods for making densified carbon printed articles from carbon powder are described. Three-dimensional binder jet printing is used to make a printed article from the carbon powder. The printed articles are infiltrated with pitch and may be heated to graphitize at least a portion of the pitch to provide a near net shape densified carbon printed article.
Claims10
A process for making a densified carbon article comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a carbon powder;
- (b) depositing a layer of the carbon powder;
- (c) ink-jet depositing a binder onto the layer in a pattern that corresponds to a slice of the article;
- (d) repeating the steps (b) and (c) for additional layers of the carbon powder and additional patterns, each of which additional patterns corresponds to an additional slice of the article, until a powder version of the article is completed;
- (e) curing the powder version of the article at a temperature at which at least a portion of the binder cures to provide a cured printed article;
- and
- (f) infiltrating the cured printed article with pitch to provide an infiltrated printed article.
