Abstract
Coding techniques for a video image compression system involve improving an image quality of a sequence of two or more bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames, where each of the frames includes multiple pixels. One method involves determining a brightness value of at least one pixel of each bi-directionally predicted intermediate frame in the sequence as an equal average of brightness values of pixels in non-bidirectionally predicted frames bracketing the sequence of bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames. The brightness values of the pixels in at least one of the non-bidirectionally predicted frames is converted from a non-linear representation.
Claims5
(canceled)
One or more tangible, non-transitory, machine-readable storage devices storing instructions that when executed by one or more processing devices cause the one or more processing devices to perform operations comprising:
- receiving a bitstream that includes a first predicted frame, a second predicted frame, and a bi-directionally predicted frame, the first predicted frame being subsequent to the second predicted frame in a delivery order and the first predicted frame being prior to the second predicted frame in a display order;
- decoding a picture region of the bi-directionally predicted frame referencing the first predicted frame and the second predicted frame;
- receiving a first signal within the bitstream identifying the first predicted frame as expired;
- and
- in response to the first signal, discarding, at the decoder, the first predicted frame as a referenceable frame.
