Abstract
Methods are disclosed for creating a virtual encryption session prior to video streaming content being requested to reduce or eliminate delay in initialization of the encryption session and content delivery to the customer. A virtual session has control word(s) (CW) and virtual entitlement control message(s) (ECM) that are devoid of content specific information. One or more virtual sessions may be stored at an edge device and may be used to encrypt the first portion of a content stream while a content-specific encryption session is being initiated.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- receiving at least one virtual entitlement control message, wherein the virtual entitlement control message is associated with a first control word, and comprises placeholder content information;
- receiving a stream comprising unencrypted content;
- generating an encrypted first portion of the stream using the first control word;
- transmitting the encrypted first portion of the stream over a network;
- receiving at least one entitlement control message, wherein the entitlement control message is associated with a second control word;
- generating an encrypted second portion of the stream using the second control word;
- and
- transmitting the encrypted second portion of the stream over the network.
A method comprising:
- requesting at least one virtual encryption session and at least one corresponding virtual entitlement control message comprising placeholder content information and being associated with a first control word;
- receiving and storing the at least one virtual encryption session and at least one corresponding virtual entitlement control message;
- receiving a stream comprising unencrypted content;
- generating an encrypted first portion of the stream using the first control word;
- and
- generating at least one updated entitlement control message wherein at least a portion of the placeholder content information is replaced with content-specific information;
- and
- transmitting the encrypted first portion of the stream and the at least one updated entitlement control message over a network.
A method comprising:
- assigning a first entitlement control message comprising placeholder content information to a stream of content;
- using a control word associated with the first entitlement control message to encrypt at least a first portion of the stream of content to form an encrypted stream of content;
- generating an updated first entitlement control message by replacing at least a portion of the placeholder content information with content-specific information;
- and
- sending the updated first entitlement control message along with the encrypted stream of content.
