Distributed Application Execution Based On Device-Specific Support for Platform-Independent Device Functions

A computing device for supporting distributed application execution, the computing device comprising:

• a processor and a memory, the memory containing instructions executable by the processor such that the computing device is configured to:
• receive an application definition that identifies a plurality of platform-independent device functions to be performed by an application;
• map the platform-independent device functions to corresponding code modules stored in a code module repository;
• distribute the corresponding code modules to a plurality of remote devices for distributed execution of the application by the remote devices according to device-specific support for the platform-independent device functions by the remote devices;
• wherein to distribute the computing device is configured to send a given code module to different remote devices that have different device-specific support for the platform-independent device function corresponding to the given code module.

A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a computer program product for controlling a programmable computing device, the computer program product comprising software instructions that, when run on the programmable computing device, cause the programmable computing device to:

• receive an application definition that identifies a plurality of platform-independent device functions to be performed by an application;
• map the platform-independent device functions to corresponding code modules stored in a code module repository;
• distribute the corresponding code modules to a plurality of remote devices for distributed execution of the application by the remote devices according to device-specific support for the platform-independent device functions by the remote devices;
• wherein the distributing comprises sending a given code module to different remote devices that have different device-specific support for the platform-independent device function corresponding to the given code module.
