A method of detecting a single stranded target RNA in a sample comprising a plurality of RNAs, the method comprising:
- a) contacting the sample with:
- (i) a C2c2 guide RNA that hybridizes with the single stranded target RNA;
- (ii) a labeled detector RNA;
- and
- (iii) a C2c2 protein that cleaves the labeled detector RNA;
- and
- b) measuring a detectable signal produced by cleavage of the labeled detector RNA wherein said measuring provides for detection of the single-stranded target RNA in the sample.
