A modified surface comprising
- on a substrate wherein:
- M is a semiconductor or transition metal element;
- X is selected from O, S;
- Y is selected from C, Si, P, N;
- R4 and R5 are independently selected from H;
- single or double bonded oxygen;
- halogens;
- substituted or unsubstituted straight or branched alkanes, alkenes or alkynes of 1 to 5 carbons.
- R1, R2, and R3 are independently selected from H with the proviso that no more than 2 of R1, R2, and R3 are hydrogen;
- substituted or unsubstituted straight or branched alkanes, alkenes or alkynes of 1-100 carbons;
- R1, R2, and R3 can be taken in pairs to represent substituted or unsubstituted cyclic alkane, cyclic alkene or cyclic alkyne;
- R1, R2, and R3 can be independently selected from halogens;
- and —(R6O)z—R7 wherein R6 is an alkyl of 1-3 carbons;
- R7 is a terminal group.
