Abstract
Compositions or an assembly of a series of biomimetic compounds include chemical structures that mimic or structurally resemble a nucleic acid base pair. Complexes of nanotubes and agents are useful to deliver agents into the cells or bodily tissues of individuals for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. Exemplary compounds include those of Formula (I), (III), (V) or (VII), or of Formula (II), (IV), (VI) or (VIII).

A composition comprising a compound of Formula
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof wherein,
- n is an integer of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6;
- R1, R5, and R15 are selected from an α-amino acid, a β-amino acid, an α polypeptide, a β-polypeptide,
- R11 is selected from a β-amino acid, a β-polypeptide,
- j, k, m and p are independently an integer of 0 to 20;
- Rx is aliphatic or H;
- Ry is H or
- q, s and t are independently an integer of 0 to 20;
- R2, R6 and R7 are independently selected from H, CH3, or NHRz;
- and
- Rz, R12 and R16 are independently selected from H or aliphatic.

A method of making a nanotube-agent complex comprises:
- a. combining a self-assembled nanotube and one or more agents in media whereupon the one or more agents are incorporated into the nanotube to form a complex of a nanotube and one or more agents;
- or
- b. combining compounds of Formula (I), (II), (III), (IV), (V), (VI), (VII) or (VIII) and one or more agents where the compounds self-assemble into a nanotube which incorporates the one or more agents to form a complex of a nanotube and the one or more agents,
- wherein the one or more agents comprises therapeutic or diagnostic agents.

A system for selective drug delivery to a bodily tissue comprising a nanocarrier and a cargo molecule, wherein the nanocarrier comprises a compound of Formula (I), (III), (V) or (VII),
