Abstract
The invention includes methods of forming a semi-permanent film on a fiber comprising topically applying an effective amount of a composition to the hair and exposing the hair to a temperature of about 50° C. or greater thereby forming a film on the hair. The composition comprises a chitosan, an aldehyde-bearing compound, and an organic acid. Also included are the compositions that form the film, specifically compositions that form a semi-permanent film on a fiber in the presence of heat comprising a chitosan, an aldehyde-bearing compound, and an organic acid. Other, related methods are within the scope of the invention.

A method of forming a semi-permanent film on a fiber comprising topically applying an effective amount of a composition to the hair and exposing the hair to a temperature of about 50° C. or greater thereby forming a film on the hair, wherein the composition comprises a chitosan, an aldehyde-bearing compound, and an organic acid.

A method of providing a semi-permanent UV protective film to a fiber, comprising topically applying an effective amount of the liquid composition of claim 37 to the fiber and subsequently exposing the fiber to a temperature of about 50° C. to form a UV protective film on the fiber.
A chitosan:aldehyde Schiff base polymer film on a hair prepared by combining a chitosan and an aldehyde-bearing compound in the presence of water and an organic acid on a hair surface and exposing the hair surface to a temperature of about 50° C. or greater, thereby forming a film on the hair surface.
A hair care system comprising
- a. an anionic formulation comprising an anionic material and a carrier;
- and
- b. a composition the composition comprises a chitosan, an aldehyde-bearing compound, and an organic acid;
- wherein upon application of the anionic formulation and the a composition to a hair, a complex coacervate is formed that provides increased volume to the hair.
