Abstract
Methods and devices for treating nasal airways are provided. Such devices and methods may improve airflow through an internal and/or external nasal valve, and comprise the use of mechanical re-shaping, energy application and other treatments to modify the shape, structure, and/or air flow characteristics of an internal nasal valve, an external nasal valve or other nasal airways.
Claims20
A method for treating poor nasal airflow in a patient, the method comprising:
- selecting the patient, wherein the patient has poor nasal airflow caused by a deviated septum;
- inserting a treatment element into a nasal airway of the patient;
- positioning a treatment surface of the treatment element adjacent the deviated septum;
- delivering an energy-based treatment to the deviated septum with the treatment element;
- and
- altering a shape of the deviated septum by applying force to the deviated septum using the treatment surface, wherein the deviated septum at least partially maintains the altered shape after the treatment element is removed and the septum heals, thereby treating the poor nasal airflow caused by the deviated septum.
3 more elements
A device for treating a nasal septum in a patient, the device comprising:
- an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end;
- a handle at the proximal end of the elongate shaft;
- and
- a bifurcated treatment element at the distal end of the elongate shaft, the bifurcated treatment element comprising a pair of sub-elements sized and configured to be inserted into a nasal airway of the patient, with one of the pair of sub-elements on either side of the septum of the nasal airway,
- wherein each of the sub-elements comprises an energy-based treatment member configured to deliver energy to or remove energy from the septum.
2 more elements
A method for treating a septum of a nasal airway, the method comprising:
- inserting a reshaping element into the nasal airway;
- inserting an energy-based treatment element into the nasal airway, wherein the energy-based treatment element is separate from the reshaping element;
- positioning the reshaping element adjacent the septum;
- positioning the energy-based treatment element adjacent the septum;
- altering a shape of the septum using the reshaping element;
- and
- delivering an energy-based treatment to the septum using the energy-based treatment element.
