Abstract
Provided are carbon fibers rich in surface functional groups, which has been recovered by thermolysis and anodization of a carbon-fiber-reinforced composite material. Also provided is a carbon-fiber-reinforced resin composition characterized by having excellent mechanical characteristics and an excellent surface appearance at a low cost as a result of using said carbon fibers.

A method of preparation of a carbon fiber exhibiting at least 0.3 mmol/g of a total amount of acidic functional groups on a carbon fiber surface measured by Boehm titration method or at least 0.02mmol/g of an amount of carboxyl groups on a carbon fiber surface measured by Boehm titration method, comprising
- a step of heat-treating a carbon-fiber-reinforced composite material to thermally decompose at least a part of a resin component contained in the carbon-fiber-reinforced composite material, wherein the carbon-fiber-reinforced composite material is Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP);
- and
- a step of anodizing the thermally decomposed material to obtain a fibrous carbon fiber;
- wherein the decomposition of the resin component in the heat-treating step and the anodization are conducted until at least 85% of the resin component is decomposed;
- and
- the anodization is conducted under conditions of no more than 6 V of applied voltage and no more than 0.5 A/cm2 of average current density to obtain a fibrous carbon fiber.
A carbon-fiber-reinforced resin composition comprising (A) a carbon fiber not containing a sizing agent and exhibiting at least 0.3 mmol/g of a total amount of acidic functional groups on a carbon fiber surface measured by Boehm titration method or at least 0.02 mmol/g of an amount of carboxyl groups on a carbon fiber surface measured by Boehm titration method and (B) a thermoplastic resin;
- wherein the resin composition comprises 5 to 95 mass % of (A) a carbon fiber and 5 to 95 mass % of (B) a thermoplastic resin on the basis of a total amount of (A) the carbon fiber and (B) the thermoplastic resin as 100 mass %.
