Abstract
A video transrater, and a transrater system and method. The transrater system and method may select an optimal bit rate from among a plurality of available bit rates in order to obtain a particular video quality and/or format.

A method comprising:
- receiving a content asset at a first bit rate;
- receiving, from a device, a request for content at a first content quality level;
- generating a plurality of encoded copies of the content asset, each of the encoded copies having a different number of null packets added to each frame of the content asset to identify, for each of the encoded copies, a content quality level of the content asset;
- selecting, based on the first content quality level and the content quality levels of the encoded copies, one of the encoded copies;
- and
- transmitting, to the device and at a second bit rate different from the first bit rate, the selected one of the encoded copies.

- an apparatus comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- first memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the apparatus to:
- receive a content asset at a first bit rate;
- receive, from a device, a request for content at a first content quality level;
- generate a plurality of encoded copies of the content asset, each of the encoded copies having a different number of null packets added to each frame of the content asset to identify, for each of the encoded copies, a content quality level of the content asset;
- select, based on the first content quality level and the content quality levels of the encoded copies, one of the encoded copies;

- transmit, to the device and at a second bit rate different from the first bit rate, the selected one of the encoded copies;

- the device, wherein the device comprises:
- one or more processors;
- and
- second memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the device to:
- send the request for content at the first content quality level.

- encode a content asset at a plurality of constant bit rates to produce a plurality of encoded copies of the content asset in which each of the encoded copies of the content asset has a different number of null packets added to each frame of the content asset;
- receive, from one or more devices, one or more requests to access the content asset on one or more types of content platforms;
- and
- transmit, to each of the one or more devices, one or more of the encoded copies of the content asset that corresponds to an optimal constant bit rate for the one or more types of content platforms;
- and
- the one or more devices, wherein each of the one or more devices comprises:
- one or more processors;
- and
- second memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the device to:
- send the one or more requests to access the content asset on one or more types of content platforms.
