Abstract
System and method for supporting shared multicast local identifiers (MLIDs) a high performance computing environment. In accordance with an embodiment, a shared MLID range can be configured such that each subnet within a fabric can utilize an MLID within a shared MLID range without the need to utilize a TCAM, or other memory, lookup of a MGID to MLID mapping.
Claims20
A method for supporting a shared multicast local identifier (MLID) range in a high performance computing environment, comprising:
- providing, at one or more computers, including one or more microprocessors a network fabric, the network fabric comprising
- a first subnet, the first subnet comprising a first set of network switches and a first subnet manager;
- a second subnet, the second subnet comprising a second set of network switches and a second subnet manager;
- and
- a global fabric manager, the global fabric manager having administrative control within the first subnet and second subnet;
- configuring, within a span of multicast LID values, a shared MLID range, the shared MLID range being defined by a second span of multicast LID values between a shared MLID base and a shared MLID maximum;
- receiving, at a switch of the first set of network switches, a packet from a switch of the second set of network switches;
- inspecting, by the switch of the first set of network switches, a packet header of the received packet;
- upon detection of a MLID within the packet header, checking the value of the MLID against the shared MLID range;
- and
- upon determining that the MLID within the packet header is within the shared MLID range, routing the packet via a multicast forwarding table (MFT) associated with the switch of the first set of network switches.
A system for supporting a shared multicast local identifier (MLID) range in a high performance computing environment, the system comprising:
- a computer environment comprising:
- a network fabric, the network fabric comprising
- a first subnet, the first subnet comprising a first set of network switches and a first subnet manager;
- a second subnet, the second subnet comprising a second set of network switches and a second subnet manager;
- and
- a global fabric manager, the global fabric manager having administrative control within the first subnet and second subnet;
- wherein the computer environment is configured to perform the following steps;
- configuring, within a span of multicast LID values, a shared MLID range, the shared MLID range being defined by a second span of multicast LID values between a shared MLID base and a shared MLID maximum;
- receiving, at a switch of the first set of network switches, a packet from a switch of the second set of network switches;
- inspecting, by the switch of the first set of network switches, a packet header of the received packet;
- upon detection of a MLID within the packet header, checking the value of the MLID against the shared MLID range;
- and
- upon determining that the MLID within the packet header is within the shared MLID range, routing the packet via a multicast forwarding table (MFT) associated with the switch of the first set of network switches.
The system of 8, the steps further comprising:
- propagating, by the global fabric manager, the shared MLID range to the first subnet manager and the second subnet manager.
A non-transitory machine readable medium, including instructions stored thereon for supporting a shared multicast local identifier (MLID) range in a high performance computing environment, which when read and executed by one or more computers caused the one or more computers to perform steps comprising:
- providing, at one or more computers, including one or more microprocessors
- a network fabric, the network fabric comprising
- a first subnet, the first subnet comprising a first set of network switches and a first subnet manager;
- a second subnet, the second subnet comprising a second set of network switches and a second subnet manager;
- and
- a global fabric manager, the global fabric manager having administrative control within the first subnet and second subnet;
- configuring, within a span of multicast LID values, a shared MLID range, the shared MLID range being defined by a second span of multicast LID values between a shared MLID base and a shared MLID maximum;
- receiving, at a switch of the first set of network switches, a packet from a switch of the second set of network switches;
- inspecting, by the switch of the first set of network switches, a packet header of the received packet;
- upon detection of a MLID within the packet header, checking the value of the MLID against the shared MLID range;
- and
- upon determining that the MLID within the packet header is within the shared MLID range, routing the packet via a multicast forwarding table (MFT) associated with the switch of the first set of network switches.
