Abstract
Exemplary spectrally encoded probes are provided having forward view capabilities. These probes are configured such that the detection element comprises a plurality of light collecting components, where the distal ends at least partially surround the illumination element and the proximal ends form a linear array that is optically connected to a dispersive component.

A probe comprising:
- an illumination element comprising:
- a light guiding component;
- a light focusing component;
- and
- a first dispersive component,
- a detection element comprising:
- a plurality of light collecting components, wherein the distal ends of the plurality of light collecting components at least partially surround the illumination element,
- a second dispersive component;
- a light focusing component;
- and
- a detector,
- wherein the proximal ends of the plurality of light collecting components form a linear array that is optically connected to the second dispersive component.

- a light source,
- an illumination element configured to illuminate a sample,
- a rotary junction configured to rotate the illumination element,
- a detection element comprising:
- a plurality of light collecting components, wherein the distal ends of the plurality of light collecting components at least partially surround the illumination element,
- a dispersive component;
- a light focusing component;
- and
- a detector,
- wherein the proximal ends of the plurality of light collecting components form a linear array that is optically connected to the dispersive component, and
- a processor configured to process a data from the detection element and form an image.
