Abstract
An example apparatus includes a drill bit body and a leg extending from the drill bit body. A journal may extend from the leg, with a gamma ray detector at least partially within the journal. In certain embodiments, the gamma ray detector may be confined within a pressure protective cavity at least partially within the arm of the journal. In certain embodiments, the gamma ray detector may be a scintillator aligned with at least one of a photomultiplier, photodiodes, or phototransistors.
Claims31
An apparatus, comprising:
- a drill bit body;
- a leg extending from the drill bit body;
- a journal extending from the leg;
- and
- a gamma ray detector at least partially within the journal.
2 more elements
A method comprising,
- positioning at the end of a borehole in a subterranean formation a gamma ray detector in a journal of a roller cone drill bit;
- receiving from the gamma ray detector an electrical signal corresponding to a portion of the subterranean formation proximate the end of the borehole;
- and
- determining a characteristic of the portion of the subterranean formation based, at least in part, on the received electrical signal.
