Abstract
An expandable support device for tissue repair is disclosed. The device can be used to repair hard or soft tissue, such as bone or vertebral discs. A method of repairing tissue is also disclosed. The device and method can be used to treat compression fractures. The compression fractures can be in the spine. The device can be deployed by compressing the device longitudinally resulting in radial expansion.
Claims20
An expandable implant device comprising:
- a body having a longitudinal axis, a body first surface, and a body second surface, wherein the body first surface is opposite the body second surface, and wherein the body first surface and the body second surface have slopes at equal and opposite angles with respect to the longitudinal axis;
- a first external component having a first component outer surface and a first component inner surface, wherein a first outer face of the device comprises the first component outer surface, and wherein the first component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body first surface, and wherein the first component inner surface has a slope at an equal angle with respect to the longitudinal axis as the angle of the body first surface with respect to the longitudinal axis;
- a second external component having a second component outer surface and a second component inner surface, wherein a second outer face of the device comprises the second component outer surface, and wherein the second component inner surface is in slidable contact with the body second surface, and wherein the second component inner surface has a slope at an equal angle with respect to the longitudinal axis as the angle of the body second surface with respect to the longitudinal axis;
- wherein the device has a first configuration and a second configuration, and wherein when the device is in the first configuration,
- a first longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with a first longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein a second longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with a second longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and
- a first longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with a first longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein a second longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with a second longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction;
- and
- wherein when the device is in the second configuration,
- the first longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with the first longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein the second longitudinal end of the first external component outer surface is co-terminal with the second longitudinal end of the second external component outer surface in the longitudinal direction, and
- the first longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with the first longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction, and wherein the second longitudinal end of the first external component inner surface is co-terminal with the second longitudinal end of the second external component inner surface in the longitudinal direction;
- and
- wherein the first component inner surface has a tongue, and wherein the body first surface has a groove, and wherein the tongue slidably and attachably engages in the groove.

A method for using an expandable implant device comprising:
- inserting and positioning an expandable implant device into a vertebral location, wherein the device has a longitudinal axis, and wherein the device comprises a body, a first external component, and a second external component;
- expanding the device, wherein the expanding occurs after the inserting and positioning, and wherein the expanding comprises:
- applying a first force in a first force direction on the body
- applying a second force in a second force direction on the first external component, and
- applying a third force in the second direction on the second external component;
- wherein expanding further comprises sliding the first external component on and along the body first surface in a first sliding direction concurrent with sliding the second external component along the body second surface in a second sliding direction, wherein the first sliding direction is at an equal and opposite angle to the longitudinal axis as the second sliding direction, and wherein the first sliding direction is at an angle to the first force direction, and wherein the second sliding direction is at an angle to the second force direction;
- wherein the sliding of the first external component comprises sliding a tongue on a first component inner surface of first external component in a groove of a first body surface of the body.
