Abstract
A method for assessing the orthopaedic performance of a joint of a patient can comprise implanting at least a first and second RF wirelessly detectable markers in first and second bones associated with a site and determining and storing their positions before a surgical procedure is performed. The procedure can be carried out on the site and the positions of the first and second markers can be detected and stored after the procedure has been completed. The detected positions can be used to generate a representation of the orthopaedic performance of the joint after the procedure.
Claims19
A system for monitoring a position of an orthopaedic instrument, the system comprising:
- a first signal source coupled to the instrument, the first signal source being configured to generate a first output signal;
- a sensor configured to generate a data signal in response to the first output signal received from the first signal source;
- and
- a controller electrically coupled to the sensor and configured to
- determine a present position of the instrument based on the data signal received from the sensor,
- retrieve position data indicative of a previously determined position of the instrument from a storage device, and
- contemporaneously display indicia of the present position and the previously determined position of the instrument on a display device.
A system for monitoring a position of an orthopaedic instrument, the system comprising:
- a sensor configured to wirelessly transmit a data signal;
- a memory device;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- receive the transmitted data signal,
- determine a present position of the instrument based on the received data signal,
- retrieve from the memory device a previous position of the instrument stored in the memory device,
- compare the determined present position of the instrument with the retrieved previous position of the instrument, and
- cause an indication of the comparison to be displayed on a display monitor.
A method for monitoring a position of an orthopaedic instrument, the method comprising:
- receiving at a controller a wireless data signal from a sensor operatively coupled to the orthopaedic instrument during performance of a surgical procedure on a patient;
- determining at the controller a present position of the instrument based on the received data signal;
- retrieving from a memory device a previous position of the instrument stored in the memory device;
- comparing at the controller the determined present position of the instrument with the retrieved previous position of the instrument;
- and
- the controller causing an indication of the comparison to be displayed on a display monitor.
