Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods for controlling an electrical system using simulation-based setpoints. Some embodiments include control methods that enable recalculation of the optimal setpoints during demand windows. Some embodiments include a multi-mode controller to control an electrical system in a charge mode and a demand mode. Some embodiments include techniques for load and generation learning and prediction. Some embodiments include consideration of external data, such as weather.
Claims25
A controller of an electrical power system, the controller comprising:
- a data storage device to store historic load data for one or more loads of the electrical power system, and to store a minimum state of charge for a battery associated with the electrical power system;
- and
- one or more processors operably coupled to the data storage device and configured to:
- predict a net power consumption during a future time period of the electrical power system based on the historic load data;
- determine a demand setpoint that limits peak energy consumption of the electrical power system during the future time period and maintains a battery state of charge above the minimum state of charge during the future time period, wherein the demand setpoint is determined by performing one or more simulations of operation of the electrical power system for the future time period, each of the one or more simulations applying a candidate demand setpoint value to a model of the electrical power system that includes the predicted net power consumption;
- and
- provide at least one control value to the electrical power system to effectuate a change to the electrical power system to comply with the demand setpoint.
An electrical power control system, comprising:
- one or more sensors operably coupled to an energy storage system and one or more loads of an electrical power system, the one or more sensors configured to measure power for the one or more loads;
- a data storage device configured to store historic load data for the one or more loads and a minimum state of charge for a battery of the energy storage system;
- and
- a multi-mode controller operably coupled to the one or more sensors and the energy storage system, the multi-mode controller configured to update a demand setpoint based on a current operating mode, wherein if the current operating mode is a demand control mode, the multi-mode controller:
- predicts a net power consumption of the one or more loads during a demand reduction period, based on the historic load data;
- performs one or more simulations of operation of the electrical power control system during the demand reduction period;
- determines, based on the one or more simulations, a demand setpoint that limits peak energy consumption of the one or more loads during the demand reduction period and that maintains a state of charge of the battery above the minimum state of charge during the demand reduction period;
- and
- provides at least one control value to the electrical power system to effectuate a change to the electrical power system to comply with the demand setpoint.
