A method for treating myotonic dystrophy type 1 or type 2 by reducing the severity of symptoms of myotonic dystrophy type 1 or type 2 in a subject suffering from myotonic dystrophy type 1 or type 2 by increasing the amount of free MBNL protein,
- wherein said symptoms include those affecting the heart, central nervous system, smooth muscle, hormonal system, immune system, vision, reproductive system and skin, and
- wherein said method comprises administering to said subject a therapeutically effective amount of a compound which is caffeine
