System and method for adaptive frame re-compression in video processing system

A method of video decoding, comprising:

• receiving a video bitstream;
• decoding the video bitstream to generate a reconstructed frame;
• determining whether to re-compress the reconstructed frame for buffering based on a characteristic of the reconstructed frame that is provided in the video bitstream when a size of the reconstructed frame is greater than a first threshold;
• and
• re-compressing the reconstructed frame and storing the re-compressed reconstructed frame into a buffer of a decoder system when the reconstructed frame is determined to be re-compressed for buffering.

A decoder system, comprising:

• circuitry configured to:
• generate a reconstructed frame from a video bitstream;
• determine whether to re-compress the reconstructed frame for buffering based on a characteristic of the reconstructed frame that is provided in the video bitstream when a size of the reconstructed frame is greater than a first threshold;
• and
• re-compressing the reconstructed frame when the reconstructed frame is determined to be re-compressed for buffering;
• and
• a buffer configured to store the re-compressed reconstructed frame.

A decoder system, comprising:

• a buffer;
• and
• circuitry coupled to the buffer and configured to:
• generate a reconstructed frame from a video bitstream;
• determine whether to re-compress the reconstructed frame for buffering based on a characteristic of the reconstructed frame that is provided in the video bitstream and buffer occupancy of the buffer;
• and
• re-compress the reconstructed frame and store the re-compressed reconstructed frame into the buffer when the reconstructed frame is determined to be re-compressed for buffering.
