Abstract
Embodiments of the present technology may include a carbohydrate binder composition. The carbohydrate binder composition may include a carbohydrate, a nitrogen-containing compound, and a catalyst. The catalyst may catalyze a reaction between the carbohydrate and the nitrogen-containing compound. The catalyst may be water soluble in the composition but may become water insoluble after curing the composition.
Claims20
A fiber-containing composite comprising glass fibers and a binder, wherein the binder comprises cured products from a carbohydrate binder composition comprising a carbohydrate, a nitrogen-containing compound, and a catalyst that catalyzes a reaction between the carbohydrate and the nitrogen-containing compound, wherein:
- the nitrogen-containing compound is selected from the group consisting of an amino-amide, an amine salt of an organic acid, an ammonium salt of a carboxylic acid, and a reaction product of a urea compound and an aldehyde-containing compound,
- the catalyst is water insoluble in the fiber-containing composite,
- the catalyst comprises a polymer comprising a sulfate, sulfonate, phosphate, or phosphonate moiety, and
- the fiber-containing composite has a leach rate of ions less than a leach rate of ions from a fiber-containing composite with a sulfate, phosphate, or nitrate salt substituted for the catalyst.
A fiber-containing composite comprising glass fibers and a binder, wherein the binder comprises cured products from a carbohydrate binder composition comprising a carbohydrate, a nitrogen-containing compound, a catalyst that catalyzes a reaction between the carbohydrate and the nitrogen-containing compound, and a counter ion formed by a reaction of an acid with a base comprising ammonia, a substituted amine, or a polyamine, wherein:
- the catalyst is water insoluble in the fiber-containing composite,
- the fiber-containing composite has a leach rate of ions less than a leach rate of ions from a fiber-containing composite with a sulfate, phosphate, or nitrate salt substituted for the catalyst.
A fiber-containing composite comprising glass fibers and a binder, wherein the binder comprises cured products from a carbohydrate binder composition comprising a carbohydrate, a nitrogen-containing compound, and a catalyst that catalyzes a reaction between the carbohydrate, wherein:
- the catalyst is water insoluble in the fiber-containing composite,
- the catalyst is a sulfated epoxy, a sulfonated epoxy, a phosphate epoxy, or a phosphonated epoxy, and
- the fiber-containing composite has a leach rate of ions less than a leach rate of ions from a fiber-containing composite with a sulfate, phosphate, or nitrate salt substituted for the catalyst.
