## Abstract

Embodiments of systems, apparatuses, and methods are provided herein for disposing and documenting the disposal of controlled substances. According to one embodiment, a waste containment apparatus is provided with a housing comprising a waste input port configured for receiving controlled substance waste doses deposited into the waste containment apparatus, and a collector securely disposed within the housing and coupled to the waste input port. The collector may generally include a plurality of single-dose containers, where each container is configured for receiving one of the controlled substance waste doses deposited into the waste containment apparatus via the waste input port.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A waste containment apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of single-dose containers each configured for receiving a controlled substance waste dose, wherein each single-dose container comprises:
an inlet port for receiving a controlled substance waste dose;
an analysis chamber coupled to the inlet port for receiving and reserving a fixed amount of the received controlled substance waste dose for analysis; and
a storage chamber coupled to the analysis chamber for receiving and storing a remaining portion of the received controlled substance waste dose.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein each single-dose container further comprises a spillway arranged near a top of the analysis chamber to provide an outlet for the remaining portion of the received controlled substance waste dose to spill over into the storage chamber.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein the analysis chamber is configured for reserving about 0.1 ml to about 2 ml of the received controlled substance waste dose, and wherein the storage chamber is configured for storing about 5 ml to about 20 ml of the received controlled substance waste dose.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein each single-dose container further comprises a second inlet port for receiving another substance into the analysis chamber and/or the storage chamber.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 4, wherein each single-dose container further comprises a cap, which when closed, is configured for engaging with and sealing the first inlet port and/or the second inlet port.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein the analysis chamber and/or the storage chamber comprise an optically transmissive material.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising an analyzer coupled to the analysis chamber, wherein the analyzer is configured for determining a composition and/or concentration of the controlled substance waste dose reserved within the analysis chamber.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein the analyzer is configured for determining the composition and/or concentration of the controlled substance waste dose using a Rayleigh scattering or a Raman spectroscopy technique.

### Claim 9

A waste containment apparatus, comprising:
a housing comprising a waste input port configured for receiving controlled substance waste doses deposited into the waste containment apparatus;
a collector securely disposed within the housing and coupled to the waste input port, wherein the collector comprises a plurality of single-dose containers, each configured for receiving one of the controlled substance waste doses deposited into the waste containment apparatus via the waste input port.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein the collector further comprises a plurality of visual indicators, each positioned near a corresponding one of the single-dose containers for displaying a status pertaining to the single-dose container or the controlled substance waste dose received therein.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 10, wherein the plurality of visual indicators comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs) each configured to emit one or more different colors of light, wherein each color represents a different status.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 11, wherein each LED is configured to emit a first color of light to identify the status of the single-dose container as used, emit a second color of light to identify the status of the single-dose container as unused, and emit a third color of light to identify the status of the single-dose container as flagged for auditing.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 9, further comprising:
one or more input devices configured for receiving, from a depositor of the controlled substance waste dose, information pertaining to the controlled substance waste dose deposited into the waste containment apparatus and received within each single-dose container;
an analyzer securely disposed within the housing and coupled for identifying a composition, concentration and/or volume of each controlled substance waste dose received within each single-dose container; and
an information reconciler and recorder securely disposed within the housing and coupled for comparing the composition, concentration and/or volume of the controlled substance waste dose identified by the analyzer to the information received via the one or more input devices to determine if a match exists, and for producing a comparison result indicative of a confirmed match or an unconfirmed match based on said comparing.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein the collector further comprises:
a plurality of light emitting diodes (LEDs), each positioned near a corresponding one of the single-dose containers for displaying the comparison results pertaining to that single-dose container; and
an illumination system coupled for driving each LED to emit a particular color of light based on the comparison results received from the information reconciler and recorder.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein the illumination system is coupled for driving each LED to emit:
a first color of light to identify the corresponding single-dose container as containing a controlled substance waste dose with a confirmed match;
a second color of light to identify the corresponding single-dose container as containing a controlled substance waste dose with an unconfirmed match; and
a third color of light to identify the corresponding single-dose container as unused.

### Claim 16 (depends on 9)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein the collector comprises:
a top plate;
a bottom plate including a slot formed in a periphery of the bottom plate; and
a ring surrounding the periphery of the bottom plate;
wherein the plurality of single-dose containers are positioned around a periphery of the top plate and pivotably mounted to the ring.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 16, further comprising a rotating cam positioned beneath the bottom plate, wherein the rotating cam is configured to rotate independently of the bottom plate.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 17, wherein when a lower portion of a particular single-dose container is aligned within the slot, the lower portion is coupled for traversing a contoured surface of the rotating cam to translate a rotational motion of the rotating cam into a pivoting motion of the particular single-dose container.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 18, wherein the lower portion of each of the plurality of single-dose containers comprises a rounded edge.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The waste containment apparatus as recited in claim 18, further comprising a waste storage bin securely disposed within the housing and positioned beneath the collector, wherein the rotational motion of the rotating cam causes an upper portion of the particular single-dose container to pivot away from the top plate for depositing its controlled substance waste dose into the waste storage bin.
