## Abstract

Various embodiments concern a method for facilitating a gaming activity having specialty functionality comprising providing a grid formed by a plurality of elements and marking elements of the plurality with markings selected from a plurality of marking-types, the plurality of marking-types including a feature marking-type. A plurality of feature indicators can be positioned in the grid. Then, for each element of the plurality that is marked with the feature marking-type and positionally associated with a feature indicator of the plurality, the feature marking-type can be re-marked to a respective element of the plurality that is adjacent to the element marked with the feature marking-type and positionally associated with the feature indicator. An outcome can then be determined based on one or more combinations of the markings.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of operating a gaming device including a display, a wager input device structured to identify and validate currency or currency based tickets, and a processor, the method comprising:
receiving a signal from the wager input device indicating that a currency or a currency based ticket has been identified for wagering;
initiating a game on the display showing a grid formed by a plurality of elements, the game initiated with a wager based at least in part on the identified currency or the currency based ticket from the received signal;
marking each of the plurality of elements with one of a plurality of markings, where at least one of the plurality of markings is a feature marking;
positioning a plurality of feature indicators between adjacent elements forming the grid;
indicating elements that have a feature marking and are adjacent to a feature indicator;
re-marking elements that are adjacent to the indicated elements when a feature indicator is positioned between the elements and the adjacent indicated elements, respectively; and
determining an outcome based on one or more combinations of the markings.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
indicating elements that have a feature marking and are adjacent to another element having a feature marking that is adjacent to a feature indicator; and
re-marking elements that are adjacent to the re-marked elements corresponding to the element having a feature marking that is adjacent to a feature indicator.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising re-marking elements a second time when the re-marked elements are adjacent to two indicated elements with feature indicators positioned between the re-marked elements and each of the indicated elements.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, determining the outcome based on one or more combinations of the markings includes:
identifying a first set of one or more combinations of the markings after marking elements of the plurality with markings, but before re-marking the feature marking;
identifying a second set of one or more combinations of the markings after re-marking the feature marking; and
issuing a payout based on the first set and the second set.

### Claim 5

A gaming device comprising:
a video display device having a grid including a plurality of elements and at least one feature indicator positioned between adjacent elements of the grid;
a player interface including at least one button, the button configured to generate a signal in response to being activated;
a wager input device structured to receive currency or currency based tickets;
a memory storing data related to a plurality of spinning reels each having a plurality of symbols; and
game circuitry operable to:
receive a signal from the wager input device indicating that a currency or a currency based ticket has been received,
initiate a game on the display, the game having a wager based at least in part on the identified currency or the currency based ticket from the received signal,
mark each of the plurality of elements on the display by moving the spinning reels through the grid and stopping the plurality of spinning reels to display symbols from the spinning reels in each of the elements of the grid,
associate a feature marker with at least one of the plurality of elements,
re-mark elements that are positionally related to a feature indicator when a correspondingly positioned element relative to the feature indicator is associated with a feature marker, and
determine an outcome based on one or more combinations of the markings.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The gaming device of claim 5, wherein associating a feature marker with at least one of the plurality of elements includes associating a feature marker with a plurality of elements having similarly marked symbols.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The gaming device of claim 5, wherein the elements re-marked are in a mirror-image placement to the elements associated with a feature marker about the feature indicator.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The gaming device of claim 7, wherein the game circuitry is operable to mark each of the plurality of elements with one of the plurality of markings by:
spinning a plurality of game reels having a plurality of game symbols within the video display; and
ending the spin of the game reels to display at least a portion of each game reel on the video display.

### Claim 9 (depends on 5)

The gaming device of claim 5, wherein the game circuitry is operable to associate a feature marker with at least one of the plurality of elements by associating at least one game symbol with a feature marker prior to spinning the plurality of game reels.

### Claim 10 (depends on 5)

The gaming device of claim 5, wherein the game circuitry is operable to associate a feature marker with at least one of the plurality of elements by marking at least one game symbol with a feature marker after the spin has ended for the plurality of game reels.

### Claim 11 (depends on 5)

The gaming device of claim 5, wherein the game circuitry is further operable to position at least one feature indicator between adjacent elements forming the grid by moving the feature indicators between adjacent game reels.

### Claim 12 (depends on 5)

The gaming device of claim 5, wherein the game circuitry is operable to re-mark elements that are positionally related to a feature indicator when a correspondingly positioned element relative to the feature indicator is associated with a feature marker by:
determining a directional relationship between the feature indicator and the element associated with the feature marker; and
determining which element of the plurality will be re-marked based on the directional relationship.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The gaming device of claim 12, wherein the element to be re-marked has the same directional relationship with the element marked with the feature marker relative to the feature indicator.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The gaming device of claim 12, wherein the element to be re-marked has the opposite directional relationship with the element marked with the feature marker relative to the feature indicator.

### Claim 15 (depends on 12)

The gaming device of claim 12, wherein the element to be re-marked has an associated directional relationship with the element marked with the feature marker relative to the feature indicator.

### Claim 16 (depends on 5)

The gaming device of claim 5, wherein the element to be re-marked is re-marked with a feature indicator.

### Claim 17

A method of operating a gaming device including a video display device having a grid including a plurality of elements and at least one feature indicator positioned between adjacent elements of the grid, a player interface including at least one button, a wager input device structured to receive currency or currency based tickets, a memory storing data related to a plurality of spinning reels each having a plurality of symbols, and a processor, the method comprising:
