## Abstract

A signal protector utilizes a variable latency station to provide error correction.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A data protection method comprising the steps of:
providing data paths A and B between an encoder and a decoder;
transporting a data stream from the encoder to the decoder over path A to supply a decoder data output;
after a data fault, using unfaulted data in a decoder buffer to continue decoder data output without interruption;
transporting corrective data stored in an encoder transmit buffer to the decoder via path B; and,
continuing an uninterrupted supply of data to the decoder data output using the corrective data and the encoder data stream transported over path B.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The data protection method of claim 1 wherein data path B does not redundantly propagate the same data values as data path A.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The data protection method of claim 2 wherein absent a data fault, there is no transporting of corrective data stored in an encoder transmit buffer to the decoder via path B.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The data protection method of claim 3 wherein after a data fault, data initially transported over path A is used to continue decoder data output.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The data protection method of claim 1 wherein data transported over path B is a subset of data transported over path A.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The data protection method of claim 5 wherein absent a data fault, there is not transporting of corrective data stored in an encoder transmit buffer to the decoder via path B.

### Claim 7

A signal protection method comprising the steps of:
providing dual data paths A and B between an encoder and a decoder;
transporting data over path A but not over path B during a pre-fault operating mode;
transporting data over path B but not over path A during a fault recovery operating mode;
transporting encoder data over path B but not over path A during a post-recovery operating mode; and,
wherein the pre-fault, fault recovery, and post-recovery operating modes are for providing an uninterrupted supply of data to a decoder data output.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The signal protection method of claim or of claim 7 wherein a decoder buffer is common to data paths A and B.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The signal protection method of claim 7 wherein an encoder buffer is common to data paths A and B.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The signal protection method of claim 9 wherein communications between the encoder and decoder buffers include path A and path B communications directed to the decoder buffer and path A and path B return control flow communications directed to the encoder buffer.
