## Abstract

A surgical stapling apparatus includes an actuating device including an elongated shaft. A tool assembly is disposed on a distal end of the shaft. The tool assembly includes a first jaw member supporting a cartridge assembly having a plurality of surgical fasteners, and a second jaw member supporting an anvil. The first jaw member is movable in relation to the second jaw member between a spaced position and an approximated position. One of the first or second jaw members includes a cantilever at a proximal end thereof. A firing cam bar assembly is slidably disposed within the tool assembly and includes a cam surface configured to engage the cantilever to move the first and second jaw member towards the approximated position and a distal end configured to deploy the plurality of surgical fasteners from the cartridge assembly.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A surgical stapling apparatus, comprising:
a handle assembly;
an elongated shaft extending from the handle assembly; and
a reload coupled to the elongated shaft, the reload including:
a tool assembly including a first jaw member pivotably coupled to a second jaw member, the first jaw member supporting a cartridge including a sled and a plurality of fasteners, and the second jaw member supporting an anvil;
a sled pusher assembly configured to contact the sled of the cartridge;
a drive beam assembly configured to move the first and second jaw members from a spaced position to an approximated position; and
a latch assembly coupled to the drive beam assembly and releasably coupled to the sled pusher assembly,
wherein when the latch assembly is coupled to the sled pusher assembly, distal translation of the sled pusher assembly effects distal translation of the drive beam assembly to move the first and second jaw members towards the approximated position and, when the latch assembly is uncoupled from the sled pusher assembly, the sled pusher assembly translates distally independently of the drive beam assembly and engages the sled of the cartridge to eject the plurality of fasteners from the cartridge.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the cartridge of the first jaw member supports a resilient member for biasing the first and second jaw members towards the spaced position.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the cartridge of the first jaw member includes three rows of fastener retention slots.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the anvil of the second jaw member includes a dissecting tip.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the drive beam assembly includes a drive beam and an I-beam coupled to a distal end of the drive beam, the I-beam translatable through the tool assembly to approximate the first and second jaw members.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 5, wherein the I-beam of the drive beam assembly has a blunt leading edge.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 5, wherein the I-beam includes a notch defined through a side wall thereof, and the sled pusher assembly includes a sled pusher positioned within the notch of the I-beam to align the sled pusher with the sled of the cartridge.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 1, wherein the latch assembly includes a latch body coupled to the drive beam assembly and a latch pivotally secured to the latch body.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 8, wherein the latch body of the latch assembly includes a longitudinal aperture, and the sled pusher assembly includes an elongated support member positioned through the longitudinal aperture.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 9, wherein the elongated support member of the sled pusher assembly includes an aperture configured to receive a protrusion of the latch of the latch assembly.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 10, wherein the latch assembly includes a spring configured to bias the protrusion of the latch into the aperture defined in the elongated support member of the sled pusher assembly.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 10, wherein the latch assembly includes a lateral offset extension configured to move the protrusion of the latch out from engagement with the aperture defined in the elongated support member of the sled pusher assembly.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 12, wherein the reload further includes an outer tube housing a shaft assembly configured to couple the reload to the elongated shaft.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 13, wherein the shaft assembly includes a ramp portion configured to contact the lateral offset extension of the latch assembly to pivot the latch when the drive beam assembly and the sled pusher assembly are translated distally to approximate the first and second jaw members.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The surgical stapling apparatus of claim 13, wherein the shaft assembly includes a stop positioned to contact the latch body of the latch assembly during distal translation of the drive beam assembly to prevent further distal translation of the drive beam assembly.

### Claim 16

A reload for use with a surgical stapling apparatus, the reload comprising:
an outer tube housing a shaft assembly;
a tool assembly extending distally from the outer tube, the tool assembly including a first jaw member pivotably coupled to a second jaw member, the first jaw member supporting a cartridge including a sled and a plurality of fasteners, and the second jaw member supporting an anvil;
a sled pusher assembly supported within the shaft assembly and configured to contact the sled of the cartridge;
a drive beam assembly supported within the shaft assembly and configured to move the first and second jaw members of the tool assembly from a spaced position to an approximated position; and
a latch assembly coupled to the drive beam assembly and releasably coupled to the sled pusher assembly,
wherein when the latch assembly is coupled to the sled pusher assembly, distal translation of the sled pusher assembly effects distal translation of the drive beam assembly to move the first and second jaw members towards the approximated position and, when the latch assembly is uncoupled from the sled pusher assembly, the sled pusher assembly translates distally independently of the drive beam assembly and engages the sled of the cartridge to eject the plurality of fasteners from the cartridge.
