## Abstract

Compositions and methods for enhancing turfgrass quality and resistance to adverse abiotic conditions are disclosed.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for enhancing overall growth and resistance to adverse abiotic conditions comprising inoculating a plant with a composition comprising at least one bacterium that expresses the ACC deaminase enzyme which catalyzes ACC to •-ketobutyrate and ammonia, thereby decreasing ethylene levels in said plants and increasing resistance to abiotic stress.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said bacteria is selected from the group consisting of at least one of Burkholderia gladioli (RU1), Herbaspirillum huttiense (PP19) Burkholderia phenazinium (WSF26), Burkholderia cepacia (CM2-8), and Herbaspirillum rhizosphaerae (PP6).

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said bacteria is a bacterium genetically engineered to express the ACC deaminase enzyme of SEQ ID NO: 1.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein said plant is a turfgrass plant selected from the group consisting of Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, Creeping Bentgrass, Bermuda, St. Augustine and Zoysia plant.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

A kit for practicing the method of claim 2, comprising turfgrass seeds and vials containing at least one bacterium that expresses the ACC deaminase enzyme, wherein said bacterium is RU1.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein turfgrass seeds are inoculated with at least one ACC deaminase expressing bacterium.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein turfgrass seeds are inoculated with at least one ACC deaminase expressing bacterium and grown in containers, wherein said bacterium is RU1.

### Claim 8 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein turfgrass sod is grown from turfgrass seeds inoculated with at least one ACC deaminase expressing bacterium.

### Claim 9 (depends on 3)

The method of claim 3, wherein said composition comprises a biofertilizer.

### Claim 10

A biofertilizer composition, comprising an effective amount of at least one ACC deaminase expressing RU1 bacteria for promoting plant growth and resistance to abiotic stresses.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The biofertilizer composition of claim 10, wherein the composition contains a mixture of ACC deaminase expressing bacteria in equal concentrations, said bacteria being selected from the group consisting of Burkholderia gladioli Herbaspirillum huttiense (PP19) Burkholderia phenazinium (WSF26), Burkholderia cepacia (CM2-8), and Herbaspirillum rhizosphaerae (PP6).

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The biofertilizer composition of claim 11, comprising a culture suspension of at least one strain of ACC deaminase producing bacteria, a sun protecting product and a polysaccharide solution.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The biofertilizer composition of claim 12, wherein the polysaccharide solution contains 1% w/v of a polysaccharide, and the polysaccharide is selected from the group consisting of guar gum, gelan gum, pectin, carboxymetil cellulose, agar, and xantan gum.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

Turfgrass seeds coated with a biofertilizer composition as claimed in claim 12, said biofertilizer improving germination of said seeds.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

The biofertilizer composition of claim 11, wherein the bacterial strains are encapsulated in allignate beads.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The biofertilizer composition of claim 11, wherein the biofertilizer is applicable to edible and non-edible plants.

### Claim 17 (depends on 12)

A kit comprising turf seeds and the biofertilizer of claim 12.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The kit of claim 17, wherein said turfseeds are from a turfgrass selected from the group consisting of Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, Creeping Bentgrass, Bermuda, St. Augustine and Zoysia plant.
