Systems and methods for spatial prediction

A video decoding method, comprising:

• receiving a video block;
• determining a prediction mode for the video block;
• determining a subsampled sub-block of the video block based on the prediction mode for the video block, the subsampled sub-block defined by pixels from every Nth column of the video block, where N≧2;
• generating a reconstructed video block using the prediction mode and the subsampled sub-block.

A device comprising a processor configured to:

• receive a video block;
• determine a prediction mode for the video block;
• determine a subsampled sub-block of the video block based on the prediction mode for the video block, the subsampled sub-block defined by pixels from every Nth column of the video block, where N≧2;
• generate a reconstructed video block using the prediction mode and the subsampled sub-block.

A video decoding method, comprising:

• receiving a video block;
• determining a prediction mode for the video block;
• determining a subsampled sub-block of the video block based on the prediction mode for the video block, the subsampled sub-block defined by pixels from at least one of interleaved columns or interleaved rows of the video block;
• generating a reconstructed video block using the prediction mode and the subsampled sub-block.
