Abstract
Controlling access to position information. Control of access to position information may be provided by exchanging authenticating messages that restrict distribution of the position information to authorized recipients. Alternatively, control of access may be provided by limiting when hardware that determines position information is active.

A method for controlling access to position information at a receiver, the method comprising:
- receiving a request for authorizing a positioning engine to access position information;
- authorizing the positioning engine to access the position information;
- providing the position information to the positioning engine after authorizing the position engine to access the position information;
- estimating, at the positioning engine, the receiver's position using the position information;
- and
- providing the estimated position to a software application.

A system for controlling access to position information at a receiver, the system comprising:
- a position information measurement engine module and a positioning engine module,
- wherein the position information measurement engine module is operable to receive a request for authorizing the positioning engine module to access position information, authorize the positioning engine module to access the position information, provide the position information to the positioning engine module after authorizing the position engine module to access the position information, and
- wherein the positioning engine module is operable to estimate the receiver's position using the position information, and to provide the estimated position to a software application module.
