Abstract
A swab canister (101) is provided which includes a container (103) equipped with a first opening (105) and having a removable sample collector (117) disposed therein. A membrane (111) which is permeable to both moisture and a sanitizing agent such as ethylene oxide is disposed between the sample collector and the first opening. A desiccant (113) disposed between the membrane and the first opening.

An apparatus, comprising:
- a container equipped with a first opening and having a removable sample collector disposed therein;
- a membrane disposed between said sample collector and said first opening, wherein said membrane is permeable to both ethylene oxide and H2O;
- and
- a desiccant disposed between said membrane and said first opening.

An apparatus, comprising:
- a sample container having a removable sample collector disposed therein;
- a sealable desiccant chamber;
- a semi-permeable membrane disposed between, and maintaining fluid contact between, the container and the chamber;
- a desiccant insertable in the chamber;
- and
- a chamber lid that seals the chamber after desiccant insertion;
- wherein during sanitizing, the interior of the container is accessible to at least one sanitizing agents through the membrane and open chamber.

A method for sanitizing a sample container, comprising:
- providing a sample container equipped with (a) a removable sample collector, (b) a sealable desiccant chamber, an (c) a semi-permeable membrane disposed between, and maintaining fluid contact between, the container and the chamber;
- exposing the interior of the sample container to a sanitizing agent, thereby sanitizing the interior of the container;
- a desiccant insertable in the chamber;
- and
- a chamber lid that seals the chamber after desiccant insertion;
- wherein during sanitizing, the interior of the container is accessible to at least one sanitizing agents through the membrane and open chamber.
