Abstract
An easy to use test device for the testing of liquids comprising a primary chamber to receive an initial liquid sample and a multiplicity of secondary regions arranged to each receive an aliquot of the initial liquid sample from the primary chamber, wherein the test device is movable in use between two positions, a first position and a second position. The device is especially suitable for carrying out on-site microbial assays with a minimal requirement for user expertise and additional apparatus. The invention also provides related methods and apparatus.
Claims23
A test device comprising a primary chamber to receive an initial liquid sample and a multiplicity of secondary regions arranged to each receive an aliquot of the initial liquid sample from the primary chamber, wherein the test device is movable in use between two positions, a first position and a second position;
- characterised in that in the first position the secondary regions are situated below the primary chamber such that an aliquot of the initial liquid sample flows under gravity from the primary chamber to each of the secondary regions;
- and that in the second position the secondary regions are located above the primary chamber such that the liquid in the primary chamber is not able to flow under gravity from the primary chamber to each of the secondary regions;
- the aliquots of liquid sample which previously flowed under gravity from the primary chamber to the secondary regions when the device was in the first position being retained in the secondary regions against the force of gravity and wherein the device is arranged so that an assay may be carried out in situ in at least some of the secondary regions.

A method of carrying out an assay, comprising the steps of:
- A, introducing a liquid sample into a primary chamber of a test device,
- B, positioning the test device such that an aliquot of the liquid sample from the primary chamber flows into each of a multiplicity of secondary regions,
- C, inverting the test device such that the aliquots of liquid sample in the secondary regions are no longer in contact with the liquid sample remaining in the primary chamber,
- D, allowing an assay reaction to take place in situ in the secondary regions and, optionally the primary chamber,
- E, reading the results of the assay reaction.
