Abstract
A solid state method of producing inorganic nanoparticles using glass is disclosed. The nanoparticles may not be formed until the glass is reacted with or degraded by contact with a fluid in vivo or in vitro.
Claims27
A method for making nanoparticles, comprising:
- mixing a glass raw material with a nanoparticle base material to form a parent glass mixture;
- heating the parent glass mixture to a first temperature, forming a parent glass melt;
- cooling the parent glass melt to a second temperature to solidify the parent glass melt, forming a parent glass;
- and
- contacting the parent glass with a solvent or a fluid.

A method of delivering nanoparticles, comprising:
- placing a parent glass comprising a nanoparticle base material in contact with a fluid;
- and
- allowing the parent glass to react or degrade to form and/or release the nanoparticles to the fluid.
(canceled)
A nanoparticle-forming glass material, comprising a degradable parent glass doped with a nanoparticle base material, wherein the nanoparticle-forming glass material is capable of forming and releasing a plurality of nanoparticles when placed in contact with a solvent or a fluid.
